My Phone Is Spoilt Again

Although I'm a hardcore Nokia phone supporter, I must say I can't say the same thing about their service centres. Is it just me or are their service centres ALWAYS packed like sardines? Shows that much about their phone quality huh? And they always don't have the stock for you.

Anyway, my N73 seems to be telling me that I have been playing "Critter Crossing" too much. You know the game where the animals have to cross to the other side the busy road / river / train tracks etc. So much so that the metal piece on the joc-stick [is that how you spell it?] decided to divorce it's holder.

So me being the super handyman that I am, decided to use super glue to mend their broken relationship. At first everything was fine and dandy, until the morning after their first night back together. When I awoke, I decided to check on them, and to my surprise, they were so much back in love that they couldn't even move. It became as stiff as a super arroused d**k, resulting in me trying to force it back into working condition and finally breaking the entire stick off the board. We have a Hokkien saying for these type of situations... kiang tio ho, mai gey kiang, losely translated it means "smart is good enough, don't act smart"

So from now until that damn nokia gets it's new batch of joc-sticks, I'm reduced to using my phone for incoming / outgoing calls and SMSes only. Any other function / software won't be operational without the joc-stick. And hopefully I still can use my built-in camera too...

I've went to Nokia for replacement parts twice [1 for battery and now joc-stick], and both times I was told that there was no stock available and I had to wait for 1 to 2 weeks for the new stock to come. This makes me wonder what type of backward inventory system they are using, so much so that the new stock almost always never come on time to top up depleting stock. Nokia, I've got a suggestion, employ me to do up a new inventory system for you. I'm sure you'll get many praises from customers after I'm done with it.

It's that time again people, the time where some people awe in amazement, some spit in disguist, and some just give the "What the..." look on their faces. It's time to reveal the answer to this week's WW Guess It. And on to your seats everyone...

Boss 1

The picture was actually the back of the item, now here's the front. Still can't guess what it is??

Boss 2

Now here's another view... From the bottom at an angle... Hmm... Looks like something that could be pressed... could it be...

Boss 3

YES! It is! A Hugo Boss perfume bottle that I use to make myself smell sweet as roses everyday before I leave the house!

Bet you didn't see that coming. This week we have a special winner. Although he didn't officially participate in the WW, he did put up a guess in my shoutbox and it was 80% right. So kudos to Eugene Boey for getting it right this week. Too bad he doesn't have a blog. Can't wait for next week's picture. It's sure to be something exciting. Cya~

PPP Hates Me

If you have noticed, I haven't been doing a lot of PPPs recently. That's not because I feel I've earned enough, [I'd be more than happy to help anybody who thinks they have earned enough spend their money] but rather because I don't have any more posts that I can do.

The thing is, PPP segregates it's users by google page ranks, which means those super high-traffic blogs [page rank: 4 and above] can do those $50-$100 posts while noobie blogs like mine can only do those which our match our page ranks [mine is a lowly 2]. And to make things worse, we still can see all those $100 oppurtunities starring at us striaght in the face.

So right now I'm practically stranded with no more $5 posts left for me to do. Hopefully PPP opens up more oppurtunities for noobie blogs like mine. Oh, and apologies again for my late posting of cruise pictures. I'm trying hard...

IT Fair 2007

Went to Suntec during the weekend for the holy grail of IT shows, IT Fair 2007. I've noticed many things during my visits to these IT Fairs during the past years. First and foremostly, the names of the Fairs are always aptly named. In 2006, it was called "IT Fair 2006", and there were almost like 2006 million people squeezing each other as if trying to imitate an overpacked tin of sardines. This year, it was called "IT Fair 2007" and guess what? There seemed to be 2007 people having their asses bumped by the lower hip area of the person behind them this year. It was almost like even if you didn't make an effort to move, you would still be pushed along as if following the current of the sea.

And with all my experience in IT Fairs, I can conclude 1 very important factor: If you go there without any intention to buy anything, you will almost definitely come out of there feeling hot, sticky, squashed and most importantly, empty-handed. IT Fairs in Singapore weren't made for people to walk-buy. You know, the process of shopping where you walk aimlessly, looking for something that catches your attention and then proceed to buy it. Mainly because it does not allow for COMFORTABLE walking. The only people who will be thankful for the IT shows are the people who have been stalking a product and waiting for a good price to buy it. But truth be told, I would rather go to a normal shopping centre and pay the additional discounted 5 to 10% you would get at the IT Fair than to squeeze with all those smelly people there.

So more about this year's show, I don't know why, but Sony suddenly decided to do a massive advertising campaign in liew with this year's IT Fair. Almost the entire CityLink underpass walkway was a living, breathing advertisement for Sony. And they even had an entire convention hall at Suntec just to show the advancements of their products from the early 19th century to our current 21st century. But I still doubt this would get them more market share, since their's is already quite large.

Then there was another 2 floors of IT products. The first floor was for the typical shopper [read : 90% of Singapore]. All the major brands had their personal booths that came complete with dummy sets, free printing, lots of freebies and not to mention beautiful models for some. All these just to attract more people to their booth. This is where the sardine packing happens. Having a walkway about 4 meters wide just ain't gonna do when 90% of kiasu Singaporeans want to take a look at the products in the fair. The other 10% who are slightly more IT saavy will go striaght to the next floor, where they sell individual parts and accesories where you can mix and match.

All in all, everything can just be summed up in 2 sentences...

"If you have something specific to buy, go straight to that booth, get your stuff and get out quickly to save your sanity. If you don't have anything specific, don't even bother visiting the fair as you will just come out frustrated and disappointed.

A Day of Many Firsts

Woo... Yesterday is a special day. Cos it's the first time since I started joining Mimi's Saturday Comeback Challenge that I've been awarded a place in the top 3. I strongly recommend that you guys try it out. It's a ball!

And the 2nd first that happened yesterday was that I got tagged by Mimi to do a MeMe. [Rhymes doesn't it?] For those of you living over the other side of the mountain, MeMe's are something like quizilla quizes where you describe something [mostly about yourself or the things around you] and then tag some other people to do the same thing. So here goes with my very first tagged MeMe...

123 MeMe : This requires no thought at all. You simply grab a book next to you, turn to page 123, skip 5 sentences and write down the next 3.

Since I'm not a book person, I had to search high and low [read: next] to find a book with 123 or more pages. And I finally found a 'book' that I would be using in the very near future... A reference book for the Maths course I'll be taking when I go to SIM. So the 6th, 7th and 8th sentence of page 123 says...

-----------------------
Convince yourself that, continuing in this way, the balance at the beginning of year t is, in dollars,

P + P(1+r) + ... + P(1+r)t-2 + P(1+r)t-1.

How can we calculate this expression?
-----------------------

Ok, I totally have no idea what they are talking about right now... Hopefully I will when I get to learning that subject. *prays*

And now the fun part... I hereby tag Alex, yandaokia, michelle, Fauzi and letha!

Going Back to My Roots

merlion

Being true to myself starts from being who I am. And truth be told, I am a lot of things, but most importantly, I'm a Singaporean. And being a Singaporean means a lot. So here are a list of things will definitely tell you that you're on this tiny little island of a red dot.

1. Standard of Living
Being a 'Urbanized' and 'Mordenized' country, the cost of living in Singapore can be comparable to that of many countries high up in the ranks like Japan and US. We have a saying here that every year, something is bound to increase, apart from your pay. And this year, it was the Goods and Services Tax [GST] which was increased from 5% to 7%. Which basically means that the cost of everything buyable is increased by 2%.

Having a high standard of living also means that the rich get richer, the poor get poorer and everyone else in between is in the rat race of reaching the 'rich' status so they can get 'richer'. Which also means that many people will be 'showing off' their fancy sports car only to drive home to an empty house at the end of the day just to get others to believe that they have it made.

I personally believe that wealth does not mathamatically or theoratically equate to happiness [believe me, I know]. Happiness comes from within, not from external factors. That's why you can see me taking public transport to work everyday.

2. The Language
Ok, 2 points I wanna talk about here. Numoro uno, the world-reknowned Singlish. Every sentence you hear on our streets ends with a 'lah', 'mah', 'meh' or 'hor'. This is the main thing that immediately distinguishes the ordinary Singaporean from any other foreigner. It's our tradition and our way of life. Some people say it's crude, but I say it distinguishes who were are so Singlish for me is a definite keeper. But of course we need to know how to translate it to proper English or some other language if your poor visitors 'catch no ball' about what we are trying to say. Here are some snippets of classic Singlish made-to-order.

"Why the bus so long?" - meaning the bus is taking a long time to come
"Can borrow me your pen?" - can you lend me your pen?
"My diskette at your there" - My diskette is with you

No.2, our coffee shop talk, especially the drinks stall. Sad to say that genuine coffee shops nowadays are depleting in numbers as more and more 'Chain Coffee Shops' try to take over. But hop on down to the nearest coffee shop under your friendly housing estate and you'll be in for a treat. I don't know if it's the same for other countries [I'm not well travelled] but the coffee talk in this country is amazing. Here are some of my favourites, for local and foreign viewing alike.

Milo/Horlicks Dinosaur - Super concentrated version of the typical drink, up till the point where you can still see a mountain of powder within the drink even when it's served.

[insert drink name] sua - This is common language used by drink pushers while communicating with their dealers. A quick way to say x2 [times two]. eg milo sua = 2 cups of milo, teh sua sua = 3 cups of tea

Tak Kiu [Hokkien for 'kicking ball'] - Traditional calling for milo. Why? Well, cos the picture on the milo tin shows a person kicking a soccer ball, hence the literal translation.

I could go on and on but lets just stop it here.

3. The Obedience
Singaporeans are like well-trained pets. Any form of rule or regulation will be adheared to as quickly as ABC. Take our public transport for example. Previously commuters were having problems entering/exiting our trains due to the conflict of interest on both sides [mainly entering and exiting]. So some smarty ass took a bucket of yellow paint, painted a few lines at the door area of the trains and pasted a notice that said "Please stand behind the yellow lines" and POOF! The problem was solved just like that. No station officials, no fines for disobience no nothing!

yellow lines

4. The Kiasu-ism!
Another trademark of a typical Singaporean. This simply means wanting to be first or best in everything. Whatever the reason that we are this way, it's always amazing to see what this simple word can do. Take for example our MacDonalds Hello Kitty craze. During that time, Mac wasn't 24-hours yet, and I think it opens at 6am daily. At 12 midnight of the release date, people were already starting to queue at the glass doors in a bid to be the lucky few [thousand] who could get their hands on the first batch of dolls. By 6am, anybody else who joined the queue would almost definitely be told that the dolls are out of stock.

This also means that getting 98/100 marks for a test is not good enough if there are people getting 100/100 for the same test. Which also means that getting 55/100 for a test is good enough if you got the highest mark in class. This Singaporean trademark is one that I do not approve of. It only gives others an unruly and sub-standard impression of us. Does rushing to be the first in line to board the almost empty bus mean that you would get back home any sooner? Oh, talking about buses, let me also mention some of the 'rules' of buses that we have.

rule #32 - The first in line to board the bus almost always doesn't have his coins ready. [This still stays true for the new ez-link card system we have now]

rule #95 - 2 talkative aunties will never share the same seat.

rule #12 - Pregnant/Elderly people have this strange power to put seated people to sleep or attact their attention to something so amazing outside the windows.

rule #72 - For some strange reason the part of the bus after the exit door is always semi-empty even if the front is packed like a can of sardines.

So there you have it, some of the glamorous and not-so-glam events in our daily lifes that make you wanna shout out "That's a Singaporean!"

Over Commercialized?

Pipi commented last night that my blog seems to be getting more and more commercialized, to the point where it was not about my personal self anymore. And I kinda agree with her. I've been trying so hard lately to increase my viewership that I almost lost myself.

Nowadays I seem to be forcing myself to post something everyday so that I can earn a quick buck or 2 by having a paid post under every original post. I believe everyone of you has experienced a time like this, where you feel your blog is becoming something that it wasn't meant to be. What was my blog ment to be in the first place?

Well, when I first started blogging, it was mainly due to the influence of friends who already had blogs going on at that time. Mainly it was just an outlet of all my thoughts and feelings which I had no where else to put. [Yeah I know it sounds loser-ish] Back then my viewership was only confined to a selected few who knew I even had a blog. I could say whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted and nobody would really care. Kinda felt that everybody was just a silent listening ear back then.

And so my blogging journey started from a little push from friends and carried on during National Service where it even almost got me into trouble once. During NS, my blogging friends started to dwindle. Most of them decided they didn't have enough time to invest on their blogs and thus my viewship decreased even more, even to the point of an average 8 hits per week. And that was basically my blogging life until...

I found bestestblog and payperpost. That's when I started to get random visits through the random blog button and started having a bunch of paid posts on my blog. Although my main readership hasn't changed much, I'm getting many new viewers mainly from the US. What I really want is not random 1-timers, but more of consistant viewers who come back for more.

So from today I'm not going to post just for the sake of posting. I will try to put more posts that are about me and my [boring] life. Although I might lose a number of visiters this way, I'm determined to get my blog back on track as something that defines me. Its about me, myself and I.

[Look, more commercialisation]

PPP : VoIP

$$$ This is a PayPerPost Advert $$$

If you're looking to cut costs on your phone bills, how about giving Vonage VoIP phones a chance to shine? By using VoIP [Voice over Internet Protocol], you can actually save up to 50% of your phone bills. Not to mention the many additional functons of their phones such as 3 way calling and call transferring and blocking. There's even a great forum you can use to communicate with other VoIP users.

Back to the Old Template

Was playing around with my template this week and I thought I finally managed to be "everybody friendly" by making it auto resize to match the size of any screen, but it seems that when i did that, I couldn't get into individual post addresses, [you know, those that we need to input for PayPerPost Ads] so sadly I'll have to bring u guys back to my old template which favours longish laptop screens [since I'm always on a laptop].

I guess I'll just have to put a "best viewed in" line somewhere in my page. Sorry to those 1024 people, you'll just have to be a bit more hardworking and scroll to the right if you wanna see the entire page.
